Montréal, 6 October 2016 – Airports Council International (ACI) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have signed a Memorandum of Understand (MOU) for providing a framework for enhanced cooperation regarding environmental related initiatives.

The announcement was made yesterday evening by Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World, during a high level Reception at ICAO’s 39th ICAO Assembly co-hosted by ACI, the International Air Transport Association, the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation and the International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations.

The MOU will see ACI and ICAO working much more closely to implement new and improved programmes for greener airports worldwide, with greater information exchange, practical guidance for best practices at airports, joint environmental workshops and training supporting the ICAO No Country Left Behind and the ACI Developing Nations Assistance (DNA) programmes and new collaboration for the development of an ACI Airport Excellence (APEX) in Environment programme figuring prominently in the intended outcomes.

“This signing highlights the alignment of both our organization,” said Gittens. “Environmental protection is one of ICAO’s strategic objectives, while promoting airport excellence and building capacity in ACI World and Regions are both within ACI’s strategic objectives. Our respective goals align with the need to improve environmental related initiatives and promote the respective capacity building at airports worldwide.”

“The fostering of sustainable aviation growth through partnership with industry is part of ICAO’s key mandate,” said Dr. Fang Liu, Secretary General, ICAO. “Environmental Protection is a strategic objective for ICAO, and our projects, initiatives and programmes in this area have a natural synergy with ACI’s. This MOU will enable both organizations to draw further on this synergy to enhance the effectiveness and resource efficiency of our efforts.”
